Kaimuki House Fire Leaves 2 Women Dead

A deadly fire killed two elderly sisters in a Kaimuki house Thursday morning.

The fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. at 3273-A Lincoln Ave. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out of the house.

"Unfortunately, when we made our way through the building and we were able to break down the fire, there were two fatalities, two women; elderly women. One found in the bedroom and one found near the point of exit in the house, " Capt. Kenison Tejada said.

The cause is under investigation. One thing that may have hampered an escape by the women is bars that were over the windows. Tejada said the bars had been there for about 20 years.

A neighbor said he used a garden hose to try to put out the fire.

"My sister was the one that called 911. And she came and woke us up to let us know there's a fire next door and get out of the house," neighbor Beau Lee said.

Warren Miyake identified the women as his aunts: Eleanor Miyake, 89, and Evelyn Miyake, 82. The two women lived in a house just behind his home, where he lives with his wife and three children.

Miyake said neighbors woke him.

"We rushed out and saw the fire. I tried to see if the key would open the door, but the fire was building," he said.

After the blaze was extinguished, firefighters found the bodies of the women.

"They went in to search, and we found that it was too late. They'd passed away from the fire," Miyake said.

The two women were longtime residents of the area.

Eleanor was a retired math teacher from Kawananakoa Intermediate School. Evelyn was a retired vice president in the First Hawaiian Bank trust department.

"They lived in the back house, on their own. They were still healthy and active. I would say they've been here at least 35 years," Miyake said. "Take care of your elders. Make sure they have smoke alarm and look after their care so that this doesn't happen to anyone else."
