Georgia Doctor Uncloaks "Med Mal Reform"

Med Mal Reform in Georgia - a complete failure - In a recent issue of the Atlanta Business Chronicle dated January 13, 2006 Dr. Kelly B. Thrasher, a Georgia physician, demonstrated that some doctors actually "get it". Dr. Thrasher pointed out the obvious failure of medical malpractice "tort reform" in Georgia to do anything but fatten insurance company profits (by again reducing their claims paid out). Duped into thinking that eliminating the ability of severely injured patients to recover full compensation for their injuries at the hands of negligent and careless medical providers would help to decrease medical malpractice insurance rates, both the Georgia medical community and the state legislature supported and then passed Senate Bill 3, a medical malpractice "tort reform" bill in February 2005. Since the implementation of that destructive "reform", many injured people have lost their ability to rebuild their lives, but not one insurer in Georgia has reduced malpractice premiums. As Dr. Thrasher states: "wild, unchecked increases in the cost of malpractice insurance [present]... a crisis of accountability in the Goliath insurance industry....
